My set up...

Sup yall? Alot of people ask me what type of equipment i use n all that...I tell cats n i dont know if they believe me or not. So... I took some pix 2 show yall...
THE SET UP

Now yall know its lowbudget over here so its not super hi-tech. Its pretty simple. Most of my stuff is used/second hand stuff...lets get started.

Heres my mpc200xl. Pretty much the main thing I use in production.(still waitin on that akai sponsorship) I have the memory expansion and the good ol' 250 meg zip drive 2 go with it. This is my 2nd mpc. The 1st 1 i had was brand new...got a good 5 years use out of it.
I got this joint used from Atomic music. I think this was actually dj celo's joint...

Heres my yamaha aw4416 daw(digital audio workstation).
This is what I use 2 record on. I dont have pro-tools. I pretty much use this 2 record vocals n track out beats...the usual stuff. I recorded my whole album(I DO WHAT I DO and THE BROWN ALBUM on this machine. Its all digital so I can still burn down 2 a cd n transfer waves over the net when I need 2. Not knockin pro-tools. Im just more of a hands on person. Im probably gonna break down n get tools 1 day...

Movin on... This is basically my receiver on top (old joint from the 80's that my neighbor let me have. Thanks Mrs. Warrick!)

The joint n the middle is my oooooold philips cd burner. Had this joint since like 97. It still works most of the time.

On the bottom is my double cassete deck(that I barely ever use...)

Almost 4got about my roland sp505. I dont make beats on it. I just use the effects on it when i sample stuff mostly. Got this joint used at atomic music.(shout out 2 my man Tem that used 2 work there)

Heres my Realistic mixer that I run my amp thru. very simple. Got this joint mad cheap at sum pawn shop...

This is my..."monitors" 2 audiovox boom box speakers(courtesy of the cd/pawn shop...I mean game exchange)

1 pair of Sennheiser head phones. I have a pair of Sony joints 2...

Yep... this is a Numark pt-01 portable turntable...dont really use it 2 go diggin. I just use it 2 sample records. Im not a dj so I dont really need techniques.

Atomic music u did it again... Heres my mic. Oktava mk319...works 4 me. Kaimbr has the same joint.

...Couldnt make beats without old records. Kinda junky but u get the picture.

And thats pretty much it...pretty basic but it works. Ive seen plenty of expensive studio set ups with wack music blastin out the monitors. It really doesnt matter what u have, its pretty much comes down 2 GOD given talent and making the best out of what u do have.

CLASSIC..ahaha

what they forget is it aint the hardware that makes the music

i mean shiieeet...try..
reason 3.0(hacked version),

m-audio midi controller(gift from a friend),

vestax portable turntable (borrowed from a friend..indefinitely)

and records...none of which was more than 5 bucks

and of course cheap stereo speakers to get that sound

-i will definitely be checkin' back on this spot..ahah

Yo thanks for posting your setup cause plenty of other kats (like me) have been wondering how you get down in the studio. I just want to brag & say I got that same cassette deck, I gave my radio shack mixer to a friend 9 years ago & he has never given it back. :(

Kev,

whats crackin? I feel the setup dude, too many cats saying you need this and need that to make music. Bottom line is whatever you're comfortable with is good enough. I've heard some joints that have been made in expensive studio's and ish dont sound as good as your ish. Keep bangin on the MPC as that drum machine there IS hip hop. BTW, when you crossing the pond and hitting the UK, I missed you the last time you were here (although I did catch an interview on Choice FM?) Uk, Stand UP! 1.

i appreciate you sharing what your set up is b/c while my understanding of what is and what isn't a dope beat is on point...my underestanding of how it's made isn't.

i'm not a dj, a producer, (or "producer") or strictly hip-hop head; i'm a fan - of your work and music on the whole. it's nice to see what you use to put in all that work to make those 3 minutes of heaven for alla us to enjoy.

- possibly the only girl reading this blog.

kev, what up? i like the set up you got. i think i got you on the low budget though. hey that mpc is looking like it has had some better days. i have a mpc 2000xl that i am trying to sale. it is not the blue one, same as yours (old style). it got upgrade memory, 8 outs, and i upgraded it to have the compact flash/media card reader. cosmetically is in great shape. everything works on it!! when i bought it, it did not have any upgrades, now i got the compact flash cards that hold up to 1GB. you can have mad samples on one of them cards. put those disks down. i am going to post a video on youtube showing that everything works, but if you or anyone else want to cop that let me no. www.myspace.com/7thcityproduction and keep making that pure hip hop, im loving it. one.

newport news VA baby.

oh and the price is $1200 i no ya'll can get one on ebay for like 700 but i dont think you will find one with everything this one has. that is why the price is $1200. i had VST Services, out in cali hook it up!

very nice blog!! nice to know where you get your thight distinctive sound from. that yamaha recorder looks interesting because i dont have protools either and really need some recording possibility for my mpc to finally spread the beats. anyways, keep up the excellent work.

Just a lil thought...

That realistic mixer is the 1ST MIXER I used as a dj. Mid 80's Radio Shack Dopeness.. ha

No matter the set up, it's ur God given talent that keeps our heads nodding!!! However, that is some pretty dope stuff. Just keep bangin out those hits. By the way, I have learned that ur basslines are not for small speakers. I need the BIG GUNS to play ur joints ;-P

you forgot an important item.

word to the Kev Brown cocaine spoon thumb nail! that must be the key to pulling all those all-nighters.

watch everyone go out and intentionally cop low budget shit thinking they will sound like kev beezy....its not the gear its the mind kiddies..kev brown got that piff

Anonymous said...

LOOOOOW BUDGET!!!, thats ill you put it out there like that Kev; a lot of other dudes are on some holier than thou tip keepin it brief on the gear list.

beats are flames tho..thats all that matters; feelin the blog man keep it up.

by virtue of the fact that the pt-01 has a horrible output quality not worthy of sampling from this is either complete b.s. or there's alot of e-diggin' going on.

pt-01 is how we keep it grimmy. that was in response to the last comment. everyone else...i got a mpc 2000 xl for sale, holla at me at www.myspace.com/7thcityproductions

Hey hey

just wanted to drop by and leave few words...

thanks for posting pics of youre setup... ive been wonderrin for sometime that what you use besides 2000 xl mp, yamaha aw... i though you´d have somekind of turntable (other than pt 01) but that apparently does the job too :) ...
also wanted to say that youre music has been a big inspiration to me (no homo :D ) and i hope you keep rocking even though you feel like youre slept on !, you still got alot of people checking out youre music on regular basis !.. i wish i´d found that fresh brownies joint somewhere but apparently even the record store that is the best out here cant retail it ( ! ) (it was limited edition wasnt it ).. keeping my hopes high that some day ill get that though...

but yeah, hope you have a nice day (which is apparently beginning there) :)

and yeah... if you ever need somekind of graphic designing to be done i could help at it cause im studying graphic design and all that at the moment so, im always down to help dope artist...

and yeah... i have a myspace site ( how original am i haha) i have some beats there and all that blah blah blah... take a look at it if you have time to do so...

alright keep up !

Peace

Dee

ps. the life rmx track was dope as hell

Anonymous said...

to dude saying that kev cant sample from the pt-01, you dont know much i think. i use a numark ttusb, but i just use the rca outs directly to the mp, not usb.i have made thousands off those tracks so you need to change your way of thinking...lets start using our creativity and stop using gear (or a lack of) as a crutch.

Yo firt and foremost ur my idol when it comes to layin down beats. Ma setup is pretty low budget too. I got an akai mpc-2000 wich was a gift from a friend of mine. And I got a radio wit a turntable on top to sample records qwich I found layin around in ma grandmoms backyard. And I got my dell computer which I also sample songs from and record my beats when they're complete. But lik you said in Alone Again "Real creativity is makin do with what you got"

Trusense said...

That setup is the truth.

Anonymous said...

makes me happy to know that im not alone in my low budget settup...just further proves that creativity and passion will ALWAYS exceed technicality.

i keep it simple with FL Studio 6, Cool Edit Pro 2.0, and some records.

keep inspirin homie!

it doenst matter what you use at all, as long as u go digin for records and you are creative.

I hear that. I've heard many tracks on $80,000 setups that don't sound half as good as yours. It all comes down to the ear. Buying equipment is a rabbit hole anyway that I almost got caught in myself...compressors, limiters, eqs, vocal enhancers, effects processors, etc. It's ridiculous. I bounce a 2 track from my MPC into Logic on an ibook G4. I do all my mastering onboard and the shit sounds sweet. I think many producers assume that they aren't selling tracks because of sound quality and immediately go reaching in their pockets to fork it out on another piece of equipment to clean it up whe its most likely just an eq problem or sumthin'...whatever. Anyway, your tracks are bangin' and carry a live, old school, swingin' 8ths kinda feel to 'em. Keep inspiring man. Peace

Damn... I didn't even know they had physical DAWs until I saw this post. I'm rockin' a 5$ setup + vinyl right now.
"Im probably gonna break down n get tools 1 day" Just an offer, but I got a probably-illegitimate copy of Ableton 8 from a friend I could upload and send you if you're interested. email me at seanrm100@gmail.com if you want to give the software a try.
